Why should you attend?
This course is designed to provide DSE assessors with a structured and holistic approach to DSE assessments, and will take the delegate from no knowledge to a competency where he or she can carry out the DSE risk assessment in accordance with the DSE regulations (1992 and 2002). By attending this course you will save your company money and keep your staff happy and safe.
What you will learn
- How to carry out a DSE assessment to meet legal and moral duty of care
- Check that the set up of computer equipment is suitable for the DSE user by understanding ergonomic standards and principles
- Understand how musculoskeletal injuries occur, and how they can be prevented for all types of DSE users (desktop, hotdeskers, homeworkers, standing workers, mobile workers, agile workers etc)
- Undertake DSE assessments for expectant mothers and workers with musculoskeletal disorders ie back pain, carpal tunnel, wrist pain
- Provide advice to the DSE user so that he or she can avoid the risk of physical, visual and stress discomfort
- Know how to select equipment, and know when to exceed the basic requirements. This knowledge is essential as without it you may purchase items that are not necessary
- For each part of the course a number of real case studies are looked at which allow the delegate to understand the course content in a real world context
- To achieve the objectives the DSE assessor training course is designed to be as practical as possible, and to stimulate and encourage proactive behaviour and discussion throughout the day
Expected outcomes
Each part of the course is designed to give the delegate the salient information to carry out the risk assessment of a DSE user
- Case studies show delegates how to carry out assessments for different users, this is backed up by formal lesson, class discussion, and working on case studies – followed by multi choice questions
- Delegates learn how to be competent users of DSE tools – checklists and information sheets, enabling them to undertake a sufficient risk assessment of DSE and user, and understand that the assessment is just as much about providing the user with training and information as completing a compliance document
- Delegates have formal lessons on the body and the risks that DSE users have when working with DSE. Delegates work on short cases studies to enable him or her to identify the hazards and risks that can result from working in certain postures
- The delegate will gain a solid understanding of the DSE assessment process, which is backed up in the accompanying handbook
Course content
- What is a DSE assessment and how is it carried out?
- The DSE workstation, the user and different ways of working
- Evaluation and assessment of different styles of workstations and identification of hazards
- Ways of working, good practice and the DSE assessment model
- Different types of DSE users and different types of Display Screens (Desktop, laptop, touchscreen, tablet, smartphone etc)
- Using the DSE model and identification of other hazards (physical, cognitive, sensory and environmental)
- The DSE regulations in context – HSE legislation and legal duty of care
- The DSE computer user workstation checklist (strengths and weaknesses)
- Posture, Health and use of Display Screen Equipment (what causes visual discomfort, physical discomfort and cognitive discomfort)
- Out of the office (home, mobile, agile workers)
- Workers with special needs (expectant mothers, tall, small, obese workers etc)
- What is an ergonomic product (this section is essential to ensure that assessors do not buy the wrong product nor waste money on buying unnecessary items – delegates are shown how to calculate desk height and how to measure a person for a chair)
- The course content and design is updated and revised continually to ensure that the course runs at the right pace and provides the assessor with the right level of expertise to carry out assessments with confidence.
Assessment
Throughout the course, the delegate will be asked multi choice questions from each of the different sections to check that learning has taken place. A simple assessment using the checklist will be carried out. Delegates will complete a master checklist which encompasses all that is learnt within the day (this activity takes place in pairs then worked on as a group). The checklist will be used to carry out 3 typical assessments. Finally, delegates must complete two tasks A) identify a number of problems in a case study and B) complete a test.
